Big Ten Power Rankings after Week 8

  1. Ohio State (6-1) 

Last Week: Defeated Indiana 54-7

Ohio State blew past Indiana with C.J. Stroud and TreVeyon Henderson leading the Buckeye offense with Stroud throwing four touchdowns and Henderson scoring two on the ground. Ohio State has now beaten Indiana 27 straight times, which is currently Football Bowl Subdivision’s longest active winning streak.

  1. Michigan (7-0)

Last Week: Defeated Northwestern 33-7

It was a slow first half with Michigan only up 10-7 but then the Wolverines scored 23 unanswered points in the second half to put away Northwestern. Michigan ran for 294 yards on the ground with Blake Corum and Hassan Haskin both going over 100 yards and scoring two touchdowns each.

  1. Minnesota (5-2)

Last Week: Defeated Maryland 34-16 

Minnesota freshman running backs Ky Thomas and Bucko Irving both go over 100 yards on the ground as Minnesota goes over 300 yards rushing to win their third straight Big Ten game. They are now tied with Iowa on top of the Big Ten West and they control their own destiny.

  1. Wisconsin (4-3) 

Last Week: Defeated Purdue 30-13 

The Badger defense held David Bell and the Boilermaker offense in check while the Badgers offense went back to Wisconsin football: pounding the ball on the ground. Graham Mertz only threw the ball eight times and that was enough as Wisconsin freshman running back Braelon Allen had himself a career day, running for 140 yards and two touchdowns.

  1. Penn State (5-2)

Last Week: Lost to Illinois 20-18

It was the NCAA’s first-ever nine-overtime game as both teams got to experience the new overtime format. Sean Clifford struggled and Penn State couldn’t establish anything on the ground as they only averaged 2.1 yards a rush for a total of 62 yards.

  1. Nebraska (3-5) 

Last Week: Idle

Next Up: Purdue 

9: Purdue (4-3) 

Last Week: Lost to Wisconsin 30-13

After dominating Iowa, Purdue couldn’t get anything going against a tough Badger defense in Madison. Aidan O’Connell threw three interceptions and the Boilermaker running game finished with -13 yards.

  1. Maryland (4-3)

Last Week: Lost to Minnesota 34-16 

Maryland QB Taulia Tagovailoa lost a fumble on the opening drive and struggled to be consistent, throwing 189 yards on 27 attempts. Maryland didn’t have the ball much with Minnesota controlling the time of possession, 37:35 to 22:35. 

Next Up: Indiana 

  1. Illinois (3-5) 

Last Week: Defeated Penn State 20-18 

Illinois came in as 23 point underdogs to defeat Penn State in State College. Illinois ran for 357 yards on the ground with Chase Brown having 223 himself. Illinois now has three Big Ten wins.

  1. Northwestern (3-4) 

Last Week: Lost to Michigan 33 to 7

Good News: It was a decent first half for Northwestern as they headed into halftime down by three. Bad News: They didn’t score in the second half and Michigan did 23 points. 

Next Up: Minnesota

  1. Indiana (2-5) 

Last Week: Lost to Ohio State 54-7 

The last time Indiana beat Ohio State, a gallon of gas cost 90 cents, U2 won album of the year with “The Joshua Tree” and I was two years old. Yes, it’s been a while… The year was 1988 by the way.
