As far as promising signings go, they don’t tend to get quite as hopeful as Max Brosmer, the fantastic new QB who is debuting for the Gophers this season. The ex-New Hampshire star has raised eyebrows thanks to a pretty explosive record at his old team, and he’s already getting comfortable here in Minnesota.
What can we expect from Brosmer as the season opens? Could he be the offensive leader we need to compete in the Big Ten? For now, let’s dig into the new signing’s record and what he’s feeling as new challenges loom on the horizon.
The leader we need?
There has already been a lot of talk about Brosmer being a leader who could help the Gophers regain offensive confidence heading into the new season.
Brosmer starts for the Gophers in what happens to be his landmark sixth season playing college football, and Coach Fleck feels they’ve found someone who can put the team on his back.
“Max has just exceeded all of our expectations,” Fleck said, according to CBS. “We had to be able to bring in somebody who was going to be able to lead the team the minute they got here.”
Brosmer has been recognized as part of the three-man shortlist for the Walter Payton Award, which should give some credibility to his offensive play. It’s not always the case that a single signing can turn a team’s fortunes around, but if anyone can make that level of impact, it’s Brosmer.
An impressive record
To get a good idea of how well a new player is going to perform for the season ahead, it’s worth looking at their track record so far. Max Brosmer is one of those players whose stats leap off the paper, and so far, he’s even more impressive in action.
Taking the lead for New Hampshire in FCS, Brosmer’s passing record soared past a superb 3,464 yards – around 313 yards per game – throughout the last season.
You can also count on him for a touchdown or two – or 29, in fact! Arguably, these are the statistics that are going to matter the most to the Gophers when it comes to transforming their passing game and give them the edge in closely-fought games. With the season rapidly approaching, you can see the futures odds here at Oddschecker for a sneak peek at who are being backed to win their early matchups.
However, it’s all about how he’s going to gel with the team. He has a stack of impressive wide receivers ready to work alongside him, such as Daniel Jackson, Le’Meke Brockington, Tyler Williams, Cristian Driver, and Elijah Spencer. It will be interesting to see if a favorite target will emerge or if everyone will see a significant uptick in catches and receiving yards.
There is plenty of confidence in Brosmer moving forward into this season, but naturally, Fleck and the rest of the Gophers staff will need to invest some serious trust in the 23-year-old if they’re going to make much-needed strides.
Who is Brosmer up against?
We’ve already made plenty of bold predictions about the Gophers’ 2024 season so far, including one about the kind of season we hope Brosmer to have. How quickly he can adjust to playing against a tougher slate of opponents will be key to this coming true.
This season, he’ll face the national champions, Michigan, who’s title run was built on incredibly stout defense. The same can be said for Iowa who are always fundamentally sound on that side of the ball, and Penn State, who are always producing talented pass rushers.
Ultimately, it’s too early to say whether Max Brosmer is the miracle signing the Gophers are looking for, but there are plenty of positive signs.
