It was another dominant defensive performance on Saturday as the Gophers topped Middle Tennessee, 34-3. A pick six, three touchdowns from Kobe McCrary, and the best helmet this season in college football were all part of Minnesota staying perfect in P.J. Fleck’s tenure.
By The Numbers
3 Points allowed, the fewest EVER by the Gophers at TCF Bank Stadium.
“Our defense created a lot of energy, purpose,” said Fleck. “They were flying around everywhere. I told our defense before they went out there, I said, ‘I want a defense that when people watch us play, they get inspired. Not just by playing football but they get inspired to live their life better by watching you play.’ That’s when you have somebody’s heartstrings, that’s when you influence people.”
107 Rushing yards for each Kobe McCrary and Rodney Smith on the night. McCrary filled in after Smith left the game with an injury and was stellar, averaging 4.7 yards per carry and finding the end zone three times.
“All of the running backs are prepared,” said McCrary. “It’s always the next one up. Rodney, Shannon, all of us are good enough to play if somebody goes down.”
0 Points allowed by the Gophers in the second half ALL SEASON. That’s some impressive coaching.
67 Yards on the pick six for Jacob Huff. The safety made an amazing play on the ball and returned it all the way to extend Minnesota’s lead.
“It was really a good call by Coach, and it was something that we game-planned for,” said Huff of the interception. “It was really a team play.”
3/12 Conversion rate on third down for the Gophers. Fleck mentioned some frustration early on with the offense, and this is an area Minnesota will look to correct in the bye week.
46 Rushing yards allowed by the Gophers, which ties their best mark at TCF Bank Stadium.
1 Of the best football helmets in college football this season, according to ESPN. The Goldy helmet was a hit with players, fans, and media, and inspired a humorous response from Fleck after the game.
