INSIDE THE MATCHUP
The Gophers hold a commanding 22-7-0 lead all-time against Harvard.
The Crimson did win the last meeting between the two teams. Harvard came into Mariucci in January of 2016 and topped Minnesota 4-3 in overtime. Only eight Gophers on the current roster played in the game.
Like most teams, Harvard has a few Minnesotans on their roster. Four Crimson will return home this weekend to play the Gophers: Henry Bowlby (Edina), Benjamin Foley (Edina), Jake Horton (Oakdale), and Jacob Olson (Saint Paul).
Harvard likes to bring up their one NCAA Championship, a win over the Gophers in 1989. But they only have one title, so we’ll enjoy our five, and they can have their one title before anyone on their team was born.
Because it’s the Ivy League, Harvard started the season late. The Crimson were a top-five preseason pick, but a 2-3-0 start has dropped Harvard down to 11/13 in the polls.
Harvard’s leading scorer this season is Ryan Donato. The junior is a second round NHL draft pack, and has three goals and seven points in five games. He’s the son of Crimson head coach Ted Donato, a member of the 1989 title team.
STORYLINE CENTRAL
Spencer Morris of the Harvard Crimson has a rundown of Harvard’s last game against Cornell. The Big Red scored with just 1.4 seconds left on Saturday to sweep Harvard.
Also from the Crimson, Stuti Telidevara previews this weekend’s series. Interesting note: Harvard has been practicing on an Olympic sheet in preparation for two games at Mariucci.
The two men’s teams don’t play often, but here’s some fun highlights of the Gopher women’s hockey teams topping Harvard for a national championship in 2015.
