Dewayne Hendrix, a 6-foot-4, 264-pound defensive end from O’Fallon (IL) Township, is one of the Midwest’s top defensive players. Gopher Hole recently talked to Hendrix about the latest on his recruitment.
Gopher Hole: What camps did you get a chance to attend this summer?
Dewayne Hendrix: The Rivals Series Camp and Top 100 Camp.
Gopher Hole: What schools are you hearing from the most right now?
Dewayne Hendrix: Probably Tennessee and Florida.
Gopher Hole: Do you even know how many offers you are up to anymore? Do you still keep track or is it hard to now?
Dewayne Hendrix: I still keep track. I think it is 23 or 24.
Gopher Hole: That has to make you feel pretty proud that all that hard work you have put into football has paid off.
Dewayne Hendrix: Yes, sir.
Gopher Hole: If I had told you a year ago that you would have 24 offers, would you have believed me?
Dewayne Hendrix: (Laughing). Probably not.
Gopher Hole: I had read that you were going to try to go to Florida this month. Were you able to make it down there?
Dewayne Hendrix: I didn’t get a chance to make it.
Gopher Hole: Are you still planning on visiting USC next month or have you thought about taking any official visits in the next couple of months?
Dewayne Hendrix: I will be going to USC next month.
Gopher Hole: What do you see as your strengths as a football player?
Dewayne Hendrix: Mainly just my speed off the edge and the moves that I put to get to the inside.
Gopher Hole: What things are you working on to continue to make yourself a better football player?
Dewayne Hendrix: More pass rush moves. When I get in trouble, what do I have to do to get out of it. Things like that.
Gopher Hole: Besides those two top schools, what other schools are you interested in?
Dewayne Hendrix: USC, Michigan State, Mizzou, Ohio State, Minnesota. There are some other ones.
Gopher Hole: What are you hearing from Minnesota?
Dewayne Hendrix: I have just been talking to the coaches. They seem to like me and want me to be the guy.
Gopher Hole: Have you been to Minnesota before?
Dewayne Hendrix: Not yet.
Gopher Hole: The coaching staff at Minnesota was previously at Northern Illinois and Southern Illinois. Were you familiar with them there?
Dewayne Hendrix: A little bit.
Gopher Hole: Would you even think about coming up to Minnesota for a visit? Have you thought about that and have they talked to you about coming up for a game?
Dewayne Hendrix: Yes, I would.
Gopher Hole: Have you thought much about what you would like to major in at college?
Dewayne Hendrix: Criminal Justice.
Gopher Hole: What would you like to do with that degree?
Dewayne Hendrix: Be a state trooper.
Gopher Hole: Anybody in your family involved in law enforcement or criminal justice?
Dewayne Hendrix: Yes. A lot of them are.
Gopher Hole: What is going to be the main thing that makes you pick School A over School B or C?
Dewayne Hendrix: Mainly, how I fit in.
Gopher Hole: Have you thought about when you are going to try to decide on a school?
Dewayne Hendrix: Not yet.
Gopher Hole: Will it probably be after your high school season?
Dewayne Hendrix: It might be during. I don’t know yet.
Gopher Hole: What are your goals for your high school team this upcoming season?
Dewayne Hendrix: I want to try to break the sack record.
Gopher Hole: Do you return most of your team from last year or did you lose a lot to graduation?
Dewayne Hendrix: We have a couple of new guys, but overall we are mostly back.
Gopher Hole: Coach Limegrover is the coach you are hearing from the most from the Gopher staff. What is your relationship with him been like so far?
Dewayne Hendrix: It has been pretty good. I just kind of wish that we could talk some more.
