Andrew Stelter, a 2014 defensive end from Owatonna (MN) High School, committed to Minnesota last month. He was the lone non-senior named to the 2012 Associated Press All-State team and led the Huskies to a 12-1 mark, losing in the 5A Prep Bowl title game to Totino-Grace 49-21. GopherHole.com caught up with Stelter to learn the latest on his commitment and senior season.

Gopher Hole: You made your commitment last month. Does that feel like a weight was lifted off your shoulder, so you can focus on your senior season?

Andrew Stelter: Definitely. That was probably the biggest reason I committed. Now, I can just focus on helping my team win games.

Gopher Hole: You made to the Prep Bowl last season and lost some good players, but you have some key returnees. What are the goals and expectations for this season?

Andrew Stelter: Our goal is to get back to where we were last year and hopefully win that last game, but we have a lot of work to do. We haven’t proven anything really. I thought that we did pretty well here today in the scrimmage, but it is a long ways to go.

Gopher Hole: Individually, what things are you working on to continue to improve yourself as a player and be ready to play at the next level?

Andrew Stelter: I am kind of working on it right now. My biggest focus has been on being a more disciplined player. Reading my guy more. Not just shooting for the ball right away and try to go two inches deep.

Gopher Hole: You have your season opener against Rochester Mayo on Friday. Are you going to the Gopher game Thursday versus UNLV?

Andrew Stelter: I am not. We have a walk-through during that.

Gopher Hole: Have you thought about making some games and do you know when you are taking your official visit?

Andrew Stelter: I’ll definitely go to quite a few games. As many as I can. We talked about my official visit, but we haven’t really set a date on it.

Gopher Hole: Have you been in contact with any of the other recruits?

Andrew Stelter: I have talked with Frank (Ragnow) once in a while. I haven’t talked to Galien (Elmore) for a month or two, but we have talked before. Me and Jeff (Jones) and all those guys.

Gopher Hole: Is that a good feeling that you have gotten to know these guys that you are all going to the same school at the same time and that you already have a little bit of a relationship with them?

Andrew Stelter: Yes. It is really nice. It helps you figure out what guys you can get along with and maybe even room with.

Gopher Hole: You look like you have gotten a little bit bigger. What are up to right now?

Andrew Stelter: I came into the season at 255. I am at about 250 after two-a-days.

Gopher Hole: What were you last year?

Andrew Stelter: I started out at 244.

Gopher Hole: What would you like to get up to before your freshman year?

Andrew Stelter: I’d like to get around 260 or 265 and still be able to keep my speed

Gopher Hole: Are they still looking at you as a defensive end or would they slide you to defensive tackle?

Andrew Stelter: It all depends on what my body looks like. If I get up to 290, I would probably move.

Gopher Hole: Are you still planning on playing other sports this year?

Andrew Stelter: Yes. I’ll do basketball and track (Shot put and discus).
