Cole Langer, a 6-foot-2, 250-pounder RB from Dell Rapids (SD) High, has helped lead the Quarriers to back-to-back state titles. Langer is a three-sport athlete and recently talked to Gopher Hole about the latest on his recruitment.

Langer, the grandson of NFL Hall-of-Famer Jim Langer who played for Miami and Minnesota, rushed for 1,236 yards as a sophomore and made 113 tackles on defense. He missed most of the 2011 season with a groin injury, but came back to help lead the Quarriers to the state title as they outscored their opposition 182-42 in their four playoff games.

Langer will carry more of the offensive load this season with the loss of twin brothers Channing and Zach Barber, who played quarterback and running back, respectively, last season. He also throw the shot put and discus and plays basketball for the Quarriers and the Dakota Schoolers AAU program.

Gopher Hole: What schools are you hearing from right now?

Cole Langer: South Dakota State, North Dakota State and Minnesota.

Gopher Hole: I know that it is tough with your AAU basketball schedule, but did you have a chance to go to any football camps this summer?

Cole Langer: I got to go to all three of those schools for camps this year.

Gopher Hole: What are you hearing from the Gophers?

Cole Langer: They haven’t offered or anything yet. They are talking to me and they are going to see how my senior year goes and hopefully it goes good.

Gopher Hole: You had a big sophomore year, but were slowed with a groin injury this past year before coming on strong in the second half of the season and won the state championship game. Do you have a lot of guys back from last year?

Cole Langer: We lost quite a bit, but we have a few returning starters so hopefully, we’ll have another good year.

Gopher Hole: You play running back on offense. What do you play on the other side of the field?

Cole Langer: I play linebacker, too.

Gopher Hole: What position are most colleges looking at you playing?

Cole Langer: Either linebacker or defensive end.

Gopher Hole: You come from a football family. Have you seen many tapes of your grandfather?

Cole Langer: I haven’t really gotten to see many yet. I’ll probably ask him sometime.

Gopher Hole: You have obviously heard what type of players that he was. He was an Hall of Famer and standout with the Dolphins. Do you talk football with him much?

Cole Langer: Yes. He has quite a few stories about back then. It is very fun to listen to.

Gopher Hole: What things have you been working on to improve yourself as a football player?

Cole Langer: Just trying to get stronger, quicker and faster. Getting more flexible to open up my legs and working hard.

Gopher Hole: Are you 100% back from the injury?

Cole Langer: I am 100%. It feels good.

Gopher Hole: Did you have a chance to go to many college games last year?

Cole Langer: Not Really. I went to the Nebraska-Iowa game, but that s more for fun. That was all I got to.

Gopher Hole: Have you talked to some coaches about going to some games this year?

Cole Langer: I talked to Minnesota about getting out for one of their games. SDSU and I’ll see from there.
