Gopher Hole caught up with East Ridge head football coach Mike Pendino to ask him about standout signal caller.
Gopher Hole: You are playing in a 7-on-7 league tonight. Is Seth there?
Mike Pendino: He is actually at the Louisville camp right now.
Gopher Hole: You probably heard the news of him being offered by Minnesota. Were you surprised or what was your reaction when you heard the news?
Mike Pendino: Not at all. Not at all. I’d be surprised if he doesn’t get offered by Louisville since he is at their camp.
Gopher Hole: When we talked about center J.C. Hassenauer and tight end George Behr several months ago, you were very high on Seth. What do you see as his strengths as a quarterback?
Mike Pendino: He is mature beyond his age and very poised. He has great arm strength. He’s got a great football mind. I put him in the class of Larry Fitzgerald. I think that he is that good.
Gopher Hole: Have you seen much of a difference from last year to this summer in terms of improvement?
Mike Pendino: He is a lot better. He has improved a bunch. He is a film watcher. He works hard at everything he does. He is a difference-maker. He’s just got “it,” if that makes any sense to you.
Gopher Hole: What other schools is he hearing from besides Minnesota and Louisville?
Mike Pendino: Just about everybody who came in this spring (to look at Hassenauer and Behr) asked about him. Whoever came in this spring, you go from Rutgers to Maryland to Stanford, they asked about him. They all knew his name. Pittsburgh. They all know the kid.
Gopher Hole: What things, along with any kid since he is only 15 years old, does he need to continue to improve on to play at the next level?
Mike Pendino: He’ll improve. He reads coverages nice. We are going to throw a lot at him and find out a lot coming up. He is pretty technically sound. He is a pretty sound kid. He can always get better and he will keep getting better, too, with all the little things that he does.
Gopher Hole: Is he going to any other camps after the Louisville one?
Mike Pendino: No, that is it. He is not going to any other college camps this year. He is only a freshman. He is going there because we are doing a little bit of what they do.
Gopher Hole: You speak very highly of him. You think that he has a chance to not only be successful high school quarterback, but also a successful college quarterback, right?
Mike Pendino: I know that he is only going to be a sophomore. I know that he only turned 15 years old, but I think that he will be every bit as good at the next level.
Gopher Hole: Obviously, the Gophers were impressed by him at camp and offered him. What are they saying to you about him?
Mike Pendino: They love him. I don’t think that you offer a freshman unless you really like him.
