Q&A: OT Robert Olson Finishes Season as State Champ, Turns Focus to Recruitment

Olson was a finalist for Minnesota’s Mr. Football.

Robert Olson, a 6-foot-5, 250-pound offensive tackle from Eden Prairie (MN) High, is one of the top offensive lineman in the state. Olson was recently named to the KARE 11 and Star Tribune All-Metro team and helped lead the Eagles to their third straight state title last week.

Olson was one of the 10 finalists for the Minnesota Mr. Football Award, which was announced on Sunday. He was honored at halftime of last weekend’s Minnesota-Chicago game as a member of the Minnesota Viking All-State team.

Olson spoke to Gopher Hole after Friday’s victory to talk about the latest on his recruitment and his senior season.

Gopher Hole: What is the latest on your recruitment right now? Where do things stand?

Robert Olson: Right now, I am hoping to get out and do some official visits and get to know some coaches and see some places and hopefully make a decision in the next month or two.

Gopher Hole: Have you had a chance to go to any college games this fall?

Robert Olson: I have been to two Gopher games, the Nebraska and Madison game. I have been to two Wisconsin games, the first was against UMass and the Indiana one. I have been to a NDSU game and a South Dakota State game.

Gopher Hole: How many offers are you up to right now?

Robert Olson: I have 10 offers. Nevada, New Mexico, Wyoming, Air Force, South Dakota State, Northern Colorado, Northern Iowa, Wofford, Princeton and Yale.

Gopher Hole: What are you hearing from the Gophers?

Robert Olson: I have been invited to all the games. When I get down to campus, I hear some good stuff.

Gopher Hole: Have you talked to the coaches about trying to go down there now that the season is over?

Robert Olson: I have not gotten an opportunity to.

Gopher Hole: You don’t have much time since you are switching to basketball and always dealing with recruitment.

Robert Olson: I’m actually not playing basketball. I am going to focus on getting ready for college football during the offseason.

Gopher Hole: Will that kind of be nice in a way since the one knock on you is your size and it is hard to get bigger and stronger when you are playing basketball?

Robert Olson: Basketball does make it tough to add weight and get bigger, so it will be a real advantage to get college ready.

Gopher Hole: Do you know what colleges you are going to try to visit in the next couple of weeks?

Robert Olson: I am going to Princeton in two weeks and that is the only one that I have scheduled in December. After that, I am hoping to get some more set up in January.
