UPDATE: Breaking News – It looks like Trevor Mbakwe will be suspended

Gopher Basketball

Gophers athletic director Joel Maturi is moving to suspend Trevor Mbakwe, according to a source. This comes after Mbakwe was arrested Monday night for violating a harassment restraining order. It turned out that Mbakwe sent a Facebook message to a St. Paul woman.

Maturi, according to the source, has told told Mbakwe he has to put the program first and is getting a lot of pressure. Gophers coach Tubby Smith appears to be deferring to Maturi; Mbakwe has been his best player this season. Smith initially was believed in support of Mbakwe.

It’s not known how long Mbakwe would be suspended for but he certainly wouldn’t play Thursday against Purdue if action is taken. Mbakwe is expected to find out after today’s practice if he indeed will be forced to sit down.

Mbakwe’s offense was a misdemeanor and his $500 bail was posted on Monday night. This is, by no means, a done deal – just what has been relayed to GopherHole.com as of now.

UPDATE: GopherHole has now been told by the source that Joel Maturi reassessed the situation, and will allow Trevor Mbakwe to suit up and play against Purdue. Once again, nothing is final until the University of Minnesota issues a press release, but as soon as they do, GopherHole will post it and keep you updated.
