The University of Minnesota football program has had three different head coaches since Matt Spaeth played his last game for the Golden Gophers. But one thing hasn’t changed in that span of time – the Gophers’ commitment to community service.

Spaeth was part of a group of two current U of M football players and two former players who spent part of their morning speaking to the 4th Grade Class at Nativity of Our Lord Catholic School Tuesday. Spaeth, who recently competed in the Super Bowl as part of the Pittsburgh Steelers, was joined by Denver Bronco wide receiver Eric Decker and Gopher seniors Duane Bennett and Shady Salamon.

Spaeth said his commitment to giving back to kids and the community began during his time at the U of M.

“We did a lot of community service when I was here at the U and I continue to do it a lot out in Pittsburgh,” Spaeth said. “I really jump at the opportunity every time I get it.”

The group spent roughly 30 minutes talking to the group about setting goals, nutrition and a number of other subjects. Salamon, who attended high school at nearby Cretin-Derham Hall, said he enjoyed talking to the students.

“It’s great to be able to come back here and talk to the kids,” Salamon said. “Things we talked about today were goals, nutrition, just past experiences of high school and middle school. Coming back here and being able to talk to them is just a great thing to do. If I’m able to help in any way possible … a lot of people have helped me in my life. If I can just touch at least one person, it’s a great opportunity to do that.”

Spaeth also reiterated the importance of school and good grades to the class during the players’ presentation.

“None of us would be where we – these guys wouldn’t be in college, Eric and I wouldn’t be in the NFL – if it weren’t for a few things,” Spaeth said. “First of all, to go to college you have to have good grades. These guys work really hard right now in school and academics. You’re always going to be able to fall back on your schooling. Your education should always be a priority.”
