Blake Weber, a 6-1, 215-pound linebacker running back from Prior Lake (MN) High, was one of ten finalists for the Minnesota Mr. Football award this past week.
Weber had 1247 total yards (810 rushing/437 yards receiving) with 14 touchdowns. He had 72 tackles and was a two-time All-Suburban Conference selection. Weber was named Star Tribune and KARE 11 Sports All-Metro was named to the Minnesota Vikings All-State team.
Weber has a big supporter in Prior Lake head coach Matt Gegenheimer.
“Blake is one of the most complete football players I have ever coached, the type of kid you could play anywhere on the field. Blake never left the field for us and was one of the top performers on the field each and every week. Blake has tremendous character, is extremely competitive, a great weight room guy and one of the hardest workers we have ever had in our program.”
Gopher Hole caught up with Weber Sunday at the Minnesota Mr. Football banquet to learn the latest on his recruitment.
Gopher Hole: Obviously, a great honor to be nominated as one of the ten finalists for the Mr. Football Award. How pleased were you with your senior season?
Blake Weber: It was a great honor being a finalist for this. I was pleased with my senior season. We didn’t go quite as far as we wanted to, obviously, but my personal performance, I was pleased.
Gopher Hole: You have to be pretty proud that you are a very good running back and a very good linebacker, while most other Class 6A kids are just one-way players. Is that something that you take pride in being effective on both sides of the field?
Blake Weber: Yes. I think that me and Alex Hart, my teammate, are the only two guys in our conference that actually start and play every play both ways. Him and I take a lot of pride in that. It is a big deal that we do that.
Gopher Hole: I know that the Gophers recently extended you a preferred-walk on opportunity. What was the reaction to that?
Blake Weber: I knew at some point they were going to give me something, but it was pretty exciting that they finally gave me something. It was a big deal.
Gopher Hole: What is the latest on your recruitment? Where do things stand right now?
Blake Weber: I just received another preferred walk-on from Northern Illinois and other than that, it has been quiet.
Gopher Hole: I saw you at quite a few Gopher games this fall. Did you get a chance to go to many other games?
Blake Weber: I went to a game at NIU and Northern Iowa.
Gopher Hole: What offers do you have right now?
Blake Weber: Just the two PWO’s.
Gopher Hole: Do you have any plans to visit any college campuses soon?
Blake Weber: I know that Minnesota wants to do an official in January, I think. Other than that, that is it.
Gopher Hole: Are you playing any sports this winter?
Blake Weber: No. Just intramural basketball and lifting.
Gopher Hole: You play baseball in the spring, right?
Blake Weber: Yes. I play baseball in the spring.
Gopher Hole: What is going to be the main factor that makes you pick School A over School B or C??
Blake Weber: Minnesota is really close to home and it is Big Ten football. I know that it is a big deal. Jerry Kill, I love the coaching staff and those guys. They are a great staff.
Gopher Hole: We had talked before about your good friend Nick Hart, who is a freshman walk-on from Prior Lake. Is that another factor?
Blake Weber: I am really good friends with Nick Hart and whenever I talk to him, he loves it down there.
