Q&A: Gophers Continue to Build East Coast Pipeline as Recruitment of Quinton Rose Picks Up

The Gophers have been targeting the East Coast as Quinton Rose is another New Yorker with a Gophers offer.

Quinton Rose, a 6-foot-5, 160 class of 2016 guard from Rochester (NY) Bishop Kearney, Jr. helped lead Albany City Rocks to an 11-6 record in the EYBL. Rose attended the Minneapolis session over Memorial Day as part of the tournament.

Rose averaged 7.6 points per game in the EYBL, while shooting 46% from the field, 38.5% from three-point range and 63.2% from the line.

Gopher Hole recently caught up with Rose, who has a Gophers scholarship offer, to learn the latest on his college recruitment and summer.

Gopher Hole: You got dinged up in the EYBL event in Minnesota and missed the final game. What was the injury?

Quinton Rose: I twisted my knee. I am going to get it checked out when I get home.

Gopher Hole: How are you feeling now?

Quinton Rose: It is pretty sore, but I think that I’ll be fine.

Gopher Hole: Have you had many injuries in the past?

Quinton Rose: This is the second time.

Gopher Hole: What is the latest on schools that you are hearing from right now?

Quinton Rose: Definitely, Florida State, Miami, Temple, George Washington, SMU and Minnesota.

Gopher Hole: Had you ever been to Minnesota before this trip?

Quinton Rose: No. This is my first time.

Gopher Hole: What are you hearing from the Gophers? What are they saying to you?

Quinton Rose: They are saying that they definitely love the way that I play. I would fit into their system well and they look forward to keep a relationship going with me.

Gopher Hole: Did you get a chance to watch much college basketball this past season?

Quinton Rose: No, I didn’t.

Gopher Hole: Have you been to many college games yet?

Quinton Rose: I have been to a few. I’ve seen George Washington, George Mason and I have seen a Cansius game. I went to the Syracuse-Georgetown game.

Gopher Hole: I know that Syracuse has been recruiting players from the City Rocks AAU program in the past like Dajuan Coleman and Tyler Lydon. Do you have a top list yet or is that a little too early yet?

Quinton Rose: Yes. It is a little too early.

Gopher Hole: When you pick a school what are going to be the main factors that are going to make you pick School A over School B or C??

Quinton Rose: Good coaches. Being able to play immediately and looking at them for after college.

Gopher Hole: Are there certain players that you watch or pattern your game after?

Quinton Rose: Michael Carter-Williams.

Gopher Hole: That is a guy that I think a lot of people compared you to because you have the same frame. He is a player who has been very successful not in the college, but in the NBA where he was named Rookie of the Year. Is that someone you have always watched?

Quinton Rose: Yes. Ever since Syracuse. I always like watching him.

Gopher Hole: What do you see as your strengths as a player?

Quinton Rose: Attacking the basket and finding the open teammate.

Gopher Hole: What are the expectations at Bishop Kearney for next season?

Quinton Rose: We should be pretty good. Expectations are high.

Gopher Hole: How far did you make it last year?

Quinton Rose: We lost in the semifinals.

Gopher Hole: What did you average?

Quinton Rose: 15, 6 and 7.

Gopher Hole: Are you going to any college or individual camps this summer?

Quinton Rose: I think that we are going to the Temple team camp.

Gopher Hole: Any family members play basketball?

Quinton Rose: My younger brother plays basketball. He is ten.

Gopher Hole: Do you work with him a lot?

Quinton Rose: All the time.

Gopher Hole: Is that kind of fun?

Quinton Rose: Yes. It is really fun.
