A Football Preview of Minnesota Golden Gophers 2016

In the last season, Minnesota Golden Gophers finished 6-7. In the offense, quarterback Mitch Leidner played with a damaged left foot towards the end of the season. His accuracy was 51 percent when he was playing as a sophomore, he was however able to raise his accuracy to 59 percent. Mitch will have to focus keenly on TE Brandon Lingen this season. During last season, he caught three TDs and 33 passes for 428 yards. Minnesota Golden Gophers drew Rashad Still, Wolitarsky and Eric Carter. As a freshman, Still had an impressive season while Carter is a smaller slot receiver.

Brad Miller will be the new OL coach and will return starters Connor Mayes, C Tyler Moore and Jonah Pirsig. As a freshman last season, Shannon rushed for six yards per carry and Rodney Smith is expected to make big plays.

On average, the Gophers backfield averaged 144.1 rushing yards per game and was ranked position 100 in the nation. The offense was ranked 106 and 103 in the nation having averaged 358.9 yards per game and 22.5 yards per game. Leidner health is absolutely important as Gophers seek to improve their offense ratings.

Jay Sawvel is the new Defensive Co-coordinator. His herculean task is likely to be in the secondary where he will have to replace Center Backs Eric Murray and Brian Boddy-Calhoun. Another NFL player in prospect is S Damarius Travis who has the potential to be the best in the unit. He put up quite a performance in Gophers win against TCU in a season opener where they won 23-17.

Senior Jalen Myrick and sophomore KiAnte Hardin will strongly cover the back as the two center backs have adequate experience. At the Left Back, the Gophers are represented by Cody Pock while Jack Lynn pays in the middle.

During the last season, Pock had a total of 99 tackles while Lynn had 11 tackles. On the line, the Gophers are particularly deep and they should improve their passes. Gophers had only 22 sacks for last year. The Defensive Tackle for the Gophers is a source of depth; Scott Ekpe and Steven Richardson are the defensive tackles. Also, redshirt Gary Moore and JUCO transfer Merrick Jackson are also in the mix.

As for the special teams, Ryan Santoso and Peter Mortell will be taking over the punting and kicking roles. Myrick, who is a solid kick returner, will improve Gophers position from last season when their returns were not impressive.

On the 1st of September, the Gophers will open the season in their home match against Oregon State. Afterwards, they will then face Indiana State in week 2 and Colorado State in week 3. On the fourth week, they will travel to Penn State where they will open the Big Ten play. On their fifth week, the Gophers will face Lowa in a home game. Comparatively, the Gophers schedule this season is a bit easier than the one from last season. It is therefore anticipated that they will be more relaxed as compared to last month which should impact their performance for the better.
